What is the Reflect Effect Smoothing Face Mask?
The Beautycounter Reflect Effect AHA Smoothing Facial Mask is a dual exfoliating mask designed to instantly transform dull, tired skin into a complexion so smooth, it glows! Why is it important to exfoliate your skin?
It’s important to exfoliate your skin to remove the damaged, dull, & worn-out skin cells on the outermost layer of our skin. Proper exfoliation will help to reveal healthier, more vibrant skin cells beneath, giving your complexion a glow! Exfoliating your skin can even help your other skincare products be absorbed better & creates a great base for seamless makeup application!
What type of exfoliation does this mask provide?
The Reflect Effect Mask provides two different types of exfoliation: chemical & physical. For the chemical exfoliant, this mask features an unique multi-acid blend made up of 10% AHA (Glycolic Acid) & 10% Phytic Acid to effectively exfoliate & remove buildup from your skin with little to no irritation. And the physical exfoliant comes as a result of the tiny bamboo particles that appear once the mask dries down! When you go to remove the mask, these particles work to slough away dead skin cells.
What are the key ingredients of this AHA Smoothing Mask?
As with all Beautycounter products, this Reflect Effect AHA Smoothing Facial Mask is free of over 1,800 harmful or questionable ingredients. You can read more about our ingredient standards & safety here! Below are a few key ingredients.
Glycolic Acid
Glycolic Acid is the smallest AHA molecule. It easily absorbs into the skin & is very effective for removing dead skin cells, leaving behind a smoother, brighter complexion.
Phytic Acid
If you find that you experience any sort of buildup on your skin, Phytic Acid is what you need! It’s designed to exfoliate off that buildup which ultimately reduces dry, flaky skin, & leaves behind a more even complexion.
Bamboo
The bamboo particles in this mask are from the stems of bamboo & work as a gentle physical exfoliator. When you apply the mask, you’ll see little white specks appear from the gel formula. Those white specks are the bamboo particles.
Saccharide Isomerate
Saccharide Isomerate is an ultra-hydrating sugar-based moisturizer that’s designed to combat dryness while simultaneously soothing the skin.
What results can you expect using this mask?
I’ve been using this Smoothing Mask weekly since late November & for me personally, I can notice a huge difference in my complexion after consistent use. My skin looks more even, youthful, feels so soft & smooth, & truly looks radiant after using this mask. I’ve found that any discoloration left behind from my hormonal acne is disappearing quicker than it was before incorporating this mask into my skincare routine.
Above is a photo of my skin (filter & makeup free) directly after removing the mask. And below are some real results based on a 31-subject clinical study after four weeks of use using the mask twice weekly.
After immediate use:

What skin type is best for this mask?
This is a supercharged product, but it’s still suitable for most skin types. If you have sensitive skin, I would recommend doing a small patch test on the back or side of your neck or on the inside of your wrist & waiting 24 hours before applying the mask to your face. If any type of irritation occurs, you’ll know that the mask just isn’t the right fit for your skin.
With that said, if you experience any type of reaction or irritation, the acid content in the formula may be too strong for your skin. Everyone is different, hence why doing a patch test is a great idea if you’re on the fence. I have pretty sensitive skin & I’ve had no issues whatsoever using this mask. It doesn’t irritate my skin at all.
How to use the AHA Smoothing Face Mask:
- Apply a thin, even layer of the AHA Smoothing Face Mask to clean, dry skin. To apply, you can use your fingers or the 3-in-1 Facial Tool for mess-free application.
- Leave the mask on for 10 minutes & watch the bamboo particles magically appear!
- Wet your skin with warm water & using gentle, circular motions either with clean hands or the 3-in-1 Facial Tool, remove the mask.
- Follow with your A.M. or P.M. skincare routine – follow with a toner, serum, & moisturizer once mask is removed from your skin.
How often can you use it?
I’d recommend using this Reflect Effect Mask once a week. Overuse can potentially cause irritation or disrupt your skin’s barrier, so once a week is ideal. If you’re brand new to exfoliants, I’d suggest working your way up to 1x a week by using it once every 2 weeks. If you feel that your skin is responding well, then you can bump up to 1x a week.
Tips for using the mask:
- Use the 3-in-1 Facial Tool to really complete the masking experience! You can use the flat end for mess-free application & I love using the short bristle side to remove my mask! It feels so good on your skin. Grab the two as a bundled set HERE!
- As I mentioned, you can use this Smoothing Mask within your morning or evening skincare routine but I prefer to use it in the morning so I can enjoy the radiant glow this mask gives me all day long!
- If you have rough or bumpy skin on your chest, neck, or arms, apply the AHA mask on those areas too!
- A little goes a long way! All you need is a thin layer of product covering your face!

- Due to the strength of the acids in this formula, it is not recommended to pair the mask with any other exfoliating products on the same day such as the Overnight Resurfacing Peel, Countercontrol Clear Pore Cleanser, or Counterman Daily Exfoliating Cleanser.
How does it compare to Beautycounter’s Overnight Resurfacing Peel?
If you follow me over on IG, I’m sure you have heard me RAVE about Beautycounter’s Overnight Resurfacing Peel. For anyone who is unfamiliar, the Overnight Resurfacing Peel is a leave on treatment product that you apply at night & wash off in the morning to resurface your skin.
While the Overnight Resurfacing Peel & AHA Smoothing Facial Mask deliver similar benefits, there are specific uses for both within your routine. The AHA Mask will work as your weekly boost of chemical & physical exfoliation that delivers results in just 10 minutes. And the Peel should be considered your weekly maintenance product that you can use up to every other night to repair your skin while you sleep! Also, the Overnight Resurfacing Peel does not physically exfoliate your skin. It is solely a chemical exfoliant that works on a cellular level.
Both products are an incredible addition to any skincare routine. The Peel truly transformed my skin when I started using Beautycounter skincare & I honestly already love the results I’ve seen from the AHA Smoothing Mask with just about 4 months of consistent weekly use!
However, you’ll want to be sure to NOT use both the Reflect Effect AHA Smoothing Mask & the Overnight Resurfacing Peel on the same day/night.
Should you apply SPF after using the mask?
Yes, it is recommended that you apply SPF after using this mask, especially if you use it in the morning. For face SPF, I’d recommend our Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer or the Countersun Daily Sheer Defense. Both are amazing, but Dew Skin is my daily go-to!
How to use the 3-in-1 Tool:
The 3-in-1 Facial Tool really completes the spa-like masking experience in my opinion! The tool is multipurpose, hence the name, & is made from silicone, so it feels really great on your skin! The flat spatula end is perfect for mess-free mask application & the short bristle side is amazing for exfoliating & removing the mask. Then there’s a bumpy massager side which helps you work in your post-mask skin care (serums, moisturizer, oils).
To use the 3-in-1 Tool, you’ll want to scoop some of the mask out from the jar with the spatula end & apply it directly to your face. After the mask dries down & is left on your skin for 10 minutes, dampen your skin with warm water, run the short bristle side under the water, & start to move the tool in circular motions on your face. This will help to remove the product & physically exfoliate your skin! After you use the tool, you’ll want to rinse your face with warm water to remove any left over product!
