Everything you need to know about Perfect Hydrolyzed Collagen, the benefits of consuming collagen, what it actually is, how to incorporate a collagen supplement into your diet, & more!
You may have remembered this post first being published back in 2018, but I wanted to officially update it now that we’re in 2021 because I have recently re-introduced collagen back into my diet after 2.5 years of being a vegan. After dealing with a 9+ month long battle with some pretty awful dyshidrotic eczema on my left hand, I decided to implement collagen into my diet once again.
I was recently introduced to a brand called Perfect Supplements & was blown away with their Perfect Hydrolyzed Collagen. I’ll share more about why I love it, but two things that really stood out to me when comparing Perfect Supplements Collagen to other collagen brands on the market was their heavy metal & glyphosate testing. Their stringent testing & certifications instantly had me intrigued & since then, I’ve really enjoyed adding a scoop of their collagen to my daily smoothie!
What is collagen?
Our bodies are FULL of collagen. It’s actually the most produced protein within the human body. Our bodies are made up of over 22 different forms of collage & each form is responsible for its own unique role. I’m sure you’ve heard that taking collagen can be beneficial for your hair, skin, or nails, but the potential health benefits of consuming collagen go far beyond skin level. Collagen plays an important role in a variety of bodily functions.
You may be familiar with bone broth, which is known to be immune-boosting & gut healing due to the gelatin that is produced when the bones of an animal are cooked down. That gelatin created by the bones is essentially cooked collagen. If you’ve ever made bone broth yourself, you may be familiar with how much time & work it takes to consistently prepare it to be able to drink it consistently. It’s no doubt a labor of love! By supplementing with a collagen like Perfect Hydrolyzed Collagen, it allows you to reap the benefits & nutrients of collagen in a much more convenient & accessible way.
I first sought out collagen back in 2017 after years of dealing with digestive pain after almost every meal. I’ll share more about the awesome health benefits of taking collagen below, but collagen can be an exceptional supplement for sealing the lining of our gut & aids in overall digestive health thanks to one of the amino acids, glycine, which is found in collagen.
The three main amino acids found in Perfect Hydrolyzed Collagen are glycine, proline, & hydroxyproline. Glycine is an amino acid that helps reduce inflammation, assists with the functions of the liver, & can even help improve insulin insensitivity. Proline helps the body complete protein synthesis, it also can help regulate a proper metabolism & immune responses. Hydroxyproline was found to trigger skin cells in vitro (in cells) which helps produce more hyaluronic acid which is essential for boosting the water content of our skin.
Why do we need collagen?
Collagen provides our bodies with the ability to not only be mobile beings, but it also provides protection for our internal organs, which is something I NEVER knew. As we age, we experience a drop-off in our bodies ability to produce natural collagen, beginning at age 20! Collagen provides a vital role in essentially all of our important bodily functions. With that said, if our bodies don’t get enough collagen, it can negatively influence our total body health in a variety of ways.
What to look for in a collagen supplement:
First things first, not all collagen is created equal! As with many other wellness products, it’s hard to tell the difference between a low-quality & high-quality collagen supplement from packaging & label alone. Many low-quality collagen brands hide behind beautiful labels, but fall short on what’s important in a quality collagen supplement. For example, low-quality collagen may be overly processed which destroys the amino acids, they may contain unnecessary filler ingredients, be derived from unhealthy cows, be high in heavy metals, or have a high molecular weight which interferes with our bodies absorption of the supplement!
When I was introduced to Perfect Supplements, I was blown away by their standards when it comes to their collagen. They have shared a 9 Point Test that their high quality collagen supplements are put through. If you are choosing another brand for collagen, they should be able to answer “yes” to ALL 9 questions. That will ensure that you’ve found a high quality collagen supplement safe for daily consumption. In my opinion, the Perfect Supplement 9 point test proves to me that Perfect Hydrolyzed Collagen is the best collagen supplement currently on the market.
9 Point Test For High Quality Collagen Supplements

Perfect Collagen Hydrolysate ends up having a molecular weight of just 5,000 Daltons!
4. Is The Collagen Made From Pasture Raised, Grass Fed Cows?
YES. The Perfect Hydrolyzed Collagen is made from only Brazilian Grass Fed, Pasture Raised Cows. The cows spend their life in Brazil free grazing on grass. These cows are untouched by hormones, antibiotics, chemical fertilizers or pesticides.

YES. Perfect Collagen doesn’t use any fillers, flow agents or unnecessary added ingredients.

Why is Perfect Hydrolyzed Collagen better?
Hydrolyzed was a new term for me. Essentially, hydrolyzed means that the long chain collagen is broken down into a shorter chain collagen peptides through an all natural enzyme process. This process makes the collagen much easier for our bodies to absorb, due to their low molecular weight. Perfect Supplements has the best brand of hydrolyzed collagen, hands down!
Benefits of taking a hydrolyzed collagen supplement:
- Skin health – Collagen is crucial for healthy, youthful skin!
- Strong hair & nails – Taking collagen may help keep your hair healthy, thick, shiny, & full of nutrients!
- Supports healthy muscles – Collagen is made up of amino acids which are crucial building blocks for muscles. Specifically the amino acid, Proline, helps to repair, strengthen, & build muscle growth!
- Bone health – Collagen gives our bones their structure & helps keep them strong! Consuming collagen regularly, may inhibit our bone mass from breaking down, which then leads to bone disorders such as osteoporosis.
- Healthy joints & cartilage – Taking collagen can help reduce joint pain & overall inflammation by helping our bodies maintain healthy cartilage which serves as protection to our joints.
- Digestive support – Introducing a collagen supplement can be a wonderful way to reduce gut inflammation, help regulate acid levels found within our stomachs, help food move smoothly through the GI tract, seal the lining of our gut (which is great if you suffer from Leaky Gut), & can even help assist with heart burn or other painful digestive symptoms.
- Brain, heart, & central nervous system support – The amino acids that make up collagen are essential to the health of our brain, heart, & central nervous system. The amino acid, Proline, supports healthy heart function, blood pressure, & wound healing, while Glycine, helps our bodies build healthy DNA & RNA stands. Glycine can also help our bodies fall into a deeper sleep cycle as well!
Side effects of taking a collagen supplement:
Before incorporating a collagen supplement into your diet, it’s always important to do research on the brand you’re buying from. Since collagen is considered a dietary supplement, I always suggest checking with your doctor first if you do have any concerns.
As always, I am NOT a medical professional & all information provided on my blog is based on personal experience & my own research & should NOT be mistaken for medical advice.Â
Although I’ve never personally experienced any side effects from taking a collagen supplement, everyone is different. First be sure to check all ingredients & where the collagen is being derived from for any allergens you may be sensitive or allergic to. An example of this could be a shellfish or egg allergy depending on the type of collagen.
Other collagen side effects may include:
- Mild bloating
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Rashes
Should you take collagen everyday?
Yes, you can certainly take collagen everyday. Suggested consumption is 1-2 scoops daily. The more consistent you are with consuming collagen, the more your body will respond!
How to incorporate collage into your diet?
The two main ways to incorporate collage into your diet is through bone broth or a collagen supplement like the Perfect Hydrolyzed Collagen. If you opt for bone broth, you can consume either homemade bone broth or store bought. For store bought bone broth, you’ll want to make sure the broth is made from pasture raised & grass fed animals that don’t have exposure to pesticides or added hormones. I’ve done both. I’ve made my own homemade bone broth before & have bought it pre-made from a store. It was delicious to sip on or add to things I was cooking. However, as I mentioned, making bone broth correctly is a labor of love & definitely not the most convenient when it comes to time.
That’s why I’ve always preferred incorporating collagen through a supplement powder that I can easily add to things I was already eating or drinking. But again, with a collagen supplement, you want to ensure that the collagen is high quality, made from pasture raised, grass fed animals that haven’t had exposure to pesticides & or hormones.
If you’re able to drink a cup of homemade bone broth from grass-fed, organic cows, that’s AMAZING. If you aren’t, a collagen supplement is definitely the easiest way to add more collagen into your diet. Plus! Since it doesn’t have a taste & dissolves beautifully in liquid, you can seriously sneak it into anything!
Easy ways to add Perfect Hydrolyzed Collagen into your diet:
Adding a collagen supplement into your diet is really easy! Simply add 1 or 2 scoops daily into your smoothie, juice, morning coffee, tea, soup, yogurt, & more! I love the Perfect Hydrolyzed Collagen because it instantly dissolves in any liquid & you seriously cannot even tell you added it! Have you ever tried a collagen supplement?

Hi im a celiac and have been since the 90s im just about to embark on the colligen train.
I thank you for what I have just read as its difficult to access the information you need.
Reading your piece here has really helped in so many ways.
I think with this decease we are always learning.
I do try very hard to stick to a very healthy diet dont drink or smoke. Thank you ?
Hi Jacqueline, thank you so much for stopping by! I’m so glad this post was helpful! xo
I just purchased the vital proteins collagen mixes, and some of them contain wheatgrass and barley grass, which are not gluten free. Allegedly, if the content is less than 20 ppm, celiacs shouldn’t feel an adverse reaction. However, if someone has a leaky gut, should they avoid these ingredients? Thanks!
Hi there Ally! Thanks for stopping by! As a celiac myself, I choose to avoid anything with wheatgrass or barley grass but as for someone with leaky gut, both should be fine & can have some great benefits if you tolerate them! Hope that helps!
