My honest review of Beautycounter’s new Clean Deodorant…a clean, refillable, aluminum-free antiperspirant, available in three beautiful scents – Clean Rose, Fresh Coconut, & Soft Lavender!
I am SOO excited to be sharing this Clean Deo review with you all today! It’s been a long time coming! Beautycounter has been working on this deodorant formula for 5 years – yes, 5 years & trust me when I say it has been worth the wait! I’ll be explaining all of the Clean Deo details below as I review it, but overall, wow, is it good! Everything from the sustainable, refillable packaging, to the smooth, effective formula, the beautiful scents, the adorable colors…everything is perfect!
Deodorant was my first clean swap I made years ago.
It was Spring of my senior year of college (2017) & I finally decided I was ready to make the transition over to using a clean deodorant. I held off for quite a while because I have ALWAYS had an issue with my sweating. I sweat a lot, even when I’m cold LOL it’s a problem. I’m kidding. Sweating is completely normal! But, that was something that really worried me prior to making the switch over to clean. I didn’t think I could find a clean deodorant that actually worked.
Since 2017, I’ve tried many clean deodorant formulas & brands. I’ve even tried a pink Himalayan salt crystal deodorant, that just didn’t work out! There were definitely some formulas that I enjoyed WAY more than others, but I never found one I truly loved!
I did really enjoy a specific brand for a while, & I’ve mentioned them here on my blog in past posts, but they unfortunately started adding fragrance to their formulas. If you’re new to fragrance, it’s essentially a blanket statement slapped onto ingredient labels to mask the use of hundreds to thousands of harmful chemicals, endocrine disruptors, carcinogens, skin irritants, & more.
Fragrance is a huge no-go for me, so I was sad to see the brand start to include it.
So my hunt for the best clean deodorant continued. I remember being SO exciting when I first heard that Beautycounter was finally launching a deodorant. Consultants had an opportunity to earn all three back in May of 2020, which I was able to do! I remember when they first arrived in the sample packaging, I was so anxious to actually start using them because I wanted them to work out so badly & was nervous they wouldn’t! However, once I finally tried it, I instantly fell in love with the formula, the dreamy scents, & the updated, chic, refillable packaging – need I say more?!
I’ve used this Clean Deo since it arrived in May of last year & have been nothing but impressed. Another thing that initially worried me about this formula was that it contained baking soda. My skin is pretty sensitive & I’ve experienced a reaction to baking soda found within natural deodorant on more than one occasion. I didn’t know if I’d experience the same using the Clean Deo. I wore the Clean Deo every single day this summer (which is when I experienced past irritation) & experienced zero itching, no rashes, no irritation, or redness – I was thrilled!

I could go on & on, but I’ll get into the review now! All I’ll say is that I’m so beyond excited for this launch & for you all to get your hands on this incredible formula. Deodorant is something that everyone uses & we apply it on such a sensitive area near our lymph nodes, so it’s essential that we are mindful of the ingredients found in what we are using. Rest assured…this Clean Deo is not only a safe option for your personal use, but it’s also a tremendous, sustainable option for our planet too!

Q: What is the Clean Deo?
A: The Clean Deo is Beautycounter’s new deodorant that has been 5 years in the making! This long-lasting, clean deodorant neutralizes odor & absorbs sweat, which keeps you feeling fresh all day! Everything about this deodorant has been perfected. From the quality, clean, ingredients (no aluminum here!), to the smooth application, there isn’t any crumbly white residue that will transfer onto your clothes, AND one of the best parts?! This Clean Deo is refillable!! By Beautycounter making the Clean Deo refillable, they were able to reduce its water use, fossil fuel use, & greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 47%! So not only is this deodorant good for you & your pits, but it’s also an awesome sustainable choice for our environment – & we love that!
Q: What’s the difference between deodorant & antiperspirant?
A: The biggest difference between deodorant & antiperspirants, is that many antiperspirants are formulated with aluminum, which is a heavy metal. The aluminum works to stop odor completely by plugging your pores/sweat glands, which ultimately prevents sweat from forming. Deodorants don’t stop sweating completely, but they work to neutralize any body odor & absorb what sweat might be there. Sweating is completely normal & is a very healthy detox response!
Q: How is the Beautycounter Clean Deo safer than an antiperspirant or other deodorant?
A: Not only is the Clean Deo NOT formulated with aluminum, but it’s also not formulated with any parabens, synthetic fragrances, phthalates, propylene glycol, & more! The Clean Deo DOES however come in three scents, but those scents are fully disclosed within the ingredient labels & are rigorously screened & tested to ensure they meet Beautycounter’s strict safety standards when it comes to fragrance.
Q: What are the key ingredients in this deodorant?
- Non-GMO Cornstarch & Baking Soda – The cornstarch & baking soda work together to help absorb wetness & keep skin dry, while also helping to neutralize & control any body odor!
- Organic Coconut Oil & Shea Butter – These natural emollients are rich in essential fatty acids & nutrients to help your underarms feel hydrated, smooth, & nourished throughout your daily wear!
- Candelilla Wax & Beeswax – These waxes help to condition & hydrate the underarms as well!
Q: Does this Clean Deo really work?
A: YES! As I mentioned, deodorant was my first clean swap years ago, so between then & now, I have tried A LOT of clean deodorants. Some were definitely better than others but I can honestly say I have not enjoyed a specific formula more than I have this one! Beautycounter truly outdid themselves with all aspects of this deo. It’s hands down the best clean deodorant I’ve used.

Q: Do I use the Clean Deo like a normal deodorant?
A: Yes! You’ll glide Beautycounter’s Clean Deo on to your clean, dry armpits as you would with a normal deodorant!
Q: Have you experienced any irritation with the baking soda?
A: This was something I was a little nervous about! I have experienced great sensitivity to natural deodorants containing baking soda, especially in the summer months. If you’re an active blog reader, you might remember I wrote an entire post about what to do if you’re experiencing armpit sensitivity. You can check out that post here! However, I’ve been wearing/using this Clean Deo since May & have not experience ANY irritation at all, which I was SO happy about! I wore it through the entire summer too, which has usually been the time that I experience a rash due to an abundance of sweating, but I had nothing even close using the Clean Deo! Because of my experience & knowing how sensitive my skin has been to baking soda in the past, I feel confident recommending Beautycounter’s deodorant! Worst case, try it, & if it doesn’t work, return it within our 60-day return window!
Q: What is the application of this Clean Deo like? Smooth or gritty?
A: The application of the Clean Deo is very smooth & won’t leave a gritty or grainy texture/clumps on your pits!
Q: What are the scents? Which Clean Deo scent is your favorite?
A: Beautycounter’s new Clean Deo comes in three incredible scents…Clean Rose, Soft Lavender, & Fresh Coconut! As I mentioned earlier, these scents are not your typical “fragrance” & have been vetted for the highest level of safety. Although I’ve used & loved all three scents, I would say Clean Rose is my favorite. It has a delicate rose scent & is just lovely.
- Clean Rose – modern, fresh cut rose with notes of geranium & pepper tree berry
- Fresh Coconut – tropical coconut, sweet vanilla, & sandalwood
- Soft Lavender – soothing lavender with a hint of vanilla
Q: How much does it cost?
A: The Clean Deo costs $28 USD | $37 CAD & the refillable cartridges are $18 USD | $24 CAD.
The price of the Clean Deo is reflective of the quality of ingredients, natural fragrances which are much more expensive than synthetic/artificial fragrances, it’s formulated within the United States, & contains organic coconut oil & Non-GMO, U.S. grown, organic corn starch which is important for keeping your armpits dry. There is also the refillable aspect to keep in mind as well! The initial purchase is $10 higher than the refillable cartridge. As with many clean beauty or personal care items, think of this deodorant as an investment for you health!
Q: Is there a detox process when making the switch to a clean deodorant?
A: Some people, yes, may experience a detox process when first making the switch over to using a clean deodorant. Your skin is actually detoxing, but rather, your pores & sweat ducts are releasing all of the built up toxins that have accumulated due to the use of antiperspirants! During this time, you may experience a period of heightened body odor. But don’t let this deter you from switching over to clean! Swapping out your antiperspirant for a clean deodorant is SUCH an important swap to make, so think big picture! The B.O. will only be temporary – if any at all…everyone’s different!
Q: What can I use to help along that detox process?
