Want to get the most out of your at-home workout routine? Follow my ten best tips for feeling confident in working out in the comfort of your own home!
Within the past year, my at-home workout routine has been essential for my wellbeing. Currently, I do at-home workouts exclusively, after cancelling my monthly gym membership earlier this year. Since then, I’ve learned how to get the most out of the time I spend working out at home & I’ve also found workouts that I actually love doing! Working out at home can sometimes get a bad rep & can be thought of as “not real workouts” because they don’t take place in a physical gym setting, but I’m here to tell you that they 100% do work & are amazing once you are able to find your groove!
Today, I wanted to share 10 tips that have helped me define my own home workout routine, what works for me, what I avoid, how frequently I make time to workout, & more! And of course I’m including some really cute workout gear from adidas that will make you feel amazing throughout the entire process!
10 TIPS FOR GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR HOME WORKOUT
1. Find what you LOVE doing
For some, this might mean getting on the treadmill each morning & cranking out 3 miles. You might love the surge of energy that lifting weights brings you. Yoga might fuel your soul. Hiking might excite you to get outdoors & breathe fresh air.
Whatever it is. Make sure you are doing something you LOVE & something you ENJOY!
Your at-home workouts shouldn’t be something you dread. They also shouldn’t be something that brings stress into your life. This is something that I’ve learned with my own workout routine.
In November of last year, I found Melissa Wood Health on Instagram & I fell in love with what she was putting out to the social media world. I signed up for her year long subscription at-home workout program based on low-intensity yoga & pilates workout flows & it truly was one of the best things I could have done for myself.
Finally I found what I LOVE doing & now I enjoy making the time to workout. I exclusively do Melissa’s workouts & my own yoga flows & in full honesty, I haven’t felt this good in my body, in years!
So to sum it up, whatever you enjoy doing – do it! What works for someone else, might not work for you. Make time to find workouts that you love because when you do, you will see results in more areas than one!
2. Make the time – create a schedule
It’s up to you to make the time! At-home workouts don’t come with a workout schedule like your local gym. If you don’t make the time, it simply won’t happen. We all know how busy we can get throughout the days & weeks, so it’s up to you to acknowledge that & decide how frequently you want to make time for yourself.
I do my at-home workouts about 5-6 days a week. Some days for only 15 minutes – but when you are efficient, that’s sometimes all you need! And don’t get me wrong, some weeks I only workout 4 days a week. It happens & when it does, don’t be too hard on yourself! On days where I don’t have that much time, I try my best to at least get on my yoga mat for some light stretching or some hip opening yoga poses!
3. Wear something that gets you excited to move!
I don’t care where you are or what you’re doing, if you are wearing something that makes you feel good about yourself or confident about your body, or just downright comfy – it makes the biggest difference!
I’ve rounded up some of my summer favorites from adidas that will not only make you look amazing but will help you to feel comfortable in your own skin, give you the ability to move, & allow your skin to breathe due to their lightweight, breathable fabric & styles! Comfort is key when it comes to workouts clothes!
4. Carve out a workout space within your home
Create a space that you want to be in. For me, I definitely don’t want to spend my time working out in a dusty garage! I created a space where I’m surrounded by my energizing crystals, my indoor mini fountain, my Himalayan Salt Lamp, & my yoga mat. It’s in the back room of my home, the space is light & airy with windows that cover 3 out of the 4 walls. It’s a space I want to be in.
I also found that if I keep my yoga mat rolled out, it reminds me to make time to get on it! If you keep your mat rolled up in a closet or have your weights under your bed, what are the chances that you are reminded of their whereabouts & how they could be benefitting you. You know what they say – outta sight, outta mind!
Finding a designated workout space & sticking to it, will make a world of a difference in establishing an at-home workout routine.
5. Invest in some equipment to assist your home workouts
Speaking of workout equipment & yoga mats, if you want to establish a home workout routine & stick to it, you might need to invest in some props! They don’t have to be overly expensive or fancy, they just have to get the job done! I have a pair of 2 lbs ankle weights, a resistance band set, a full body resistance band, a full body foam roller & my amazing yoga mat from Lululemon. That’s it! Good props can make a world of a difference & help you get the most out of your workouts at home.
6. Block out the noise
Like I mentioned earlier, just because something works really well for someone else, doesn’t mean it’s the best fit for you. I’ll give you an example. If you are familiar with the online fitness world, you probably know of Kayla Itsines workouts. I’ve tried committing to her method because others have seen such incredible results. But I kid you not, I hated every second of them, which is why I could never stick to it. So just because those workouts have helped thousands of people, didn’t mean they were right for me.
I also cut out cardio this year, because frankly, it’s too hard on my body. Again, the whole thing with cardio is that people make you think that you NEED it! That just isn’t the case…everyone & every body is SO different! Walking does the job for me if I feel the need to do some “cardio.”
7. Don’t step on the scale
Just don’t. It’s not worth the stress & most likely, you will see results from working out that don’t show up on those little numbers.
8. Tune in & ask yourself how you FEEL!
Following up with the no-scale advice, tune in & ask yourself how you feel instead of how much you weigh. Feeling good, energized, peaceful, & strong is so much more important than the number on the scale or whether or not you have a six pack yet.
9. Have gratitude for the ability to move your body
Be grateful for the ability to move your body in so many ways. Be grateful for the time you are able to spend taking care of yourself through working out in the comfort of your own home. Having a gratitude practice changes everything!
10. Show up for yourself
If you don’t show up for yourself – who will? This can be related to anything in life, home workouts included! Make the time, create the space, find what you enjoy doing, & show up for yourself. Not only will it fuel your body, but I assure you, it will fuel your soul as well!
So there you have it! These are my best 10 tips for cultivating a strong & consistent at-home workout routine. I’ve been working out at home for almost a year now & I’ve never felt better. You don’t need an expensive gym membership to feel or look your best. You just need to show up for yourself because that’s what makes the difference!
Do you work out at home?

Making time is definitely one of my biggest challenges, but I love this routine.
Thanks so much Melissa! xo
I LOVE working out at home! I have two little ones so it just makes sense to do it at home. I love doing yoga and some ab routines but I hope to one day have an elliptical (a girl can dream right? haha) I loved all of your tips especially the scale one! I always want to check out how much I’ve lost but recently I’ve decided that’s not my goal. My goal is to just feel healthier. Thank you for sharing these tips!
Yes Kelly, that’s wonderful! I’m so happy you found a routine that works for you! Thanks so much for stopping by! xo
